Love going to Thai Sun for both lunch or dinner. Meals are always fresh, service is great. The spring rolls are delish and the coconut shrimp is the best. Cannot beat the pad Thai. Been going for a number of years and always enjoy.
Thai Sun was a great experience for me and my date. We were greeted nicely by the owner. Our waitress was friendly, the place is decorated nicely, I wish the place was bigger, I feel bad ppl waiting outside to get a table. Food was very tasty.
I love this place. The waiters are always nice once you get talking to them. And the food is amazing. Always fresh food, and fresh shrimp. All hand cooked, def nothing from frozen here. Prices are okay, but it's easy to pay more if you order a lot. Best not to go there during busy hours though, sometimes it's understaffed. Def recommend getting the sticky rice.
The weather was great so the patio was the place to be for lunch. Had a terrific lunch, great service and in and out timely. Was easy to order, the lunch special came with everything, salad, app and a main. Pad Thai w/chicken, cocount shrimp and mango salad. The salad was fantastic, actually the whole lunch was as well. Not much more can be said without repeating myself, other than to say ....see you soon !
If you're after bright, clean and intense flavours, lots of perfectly cooked vegetables and beautiful presentation, this is the place to be. Yes, if you're looking for "authentic Thai cuisine", then maybe you won't find what you're looking for -- but when it's this tasty, I'm more than willing to brush that aside. Indeed, I've been to all of the local Vietnamese-Thai places, and Thai Sun is the one that I go to if I'm looking for something a bit different. There's no cilantro, less chili and the entrees are not exactly conducive to the family-sharing style typical of Thai cuisine. Instead, the chef focuses on brighter flavours of basil, lemongrass, kaffir lime and galangal -- right up my palate. And for someone that loves my vegetables, she gives it to me in spades, perfectly cooked: and unlike many other local southeast Asian restaurants, she offers bamboo shoots and Thai eggplant. Awesome! Her tom yum is the best I've had. While some can suffer from too much fish sauce or even shrimp paste -- and I like seafood -- hers is refreshing and intense with lemongrass, basil and galangal, all floating in the soup. It's normally offered with tomatoes and mushrooms, but I've had it substituted with carrots and broccoli for a very pleasant experience. Service is consistently friendly; occasional mistakes do occur, though. Decor is clean and fun. One suggestion for improvement, though: while I understand why they don't use cilantro (their reasoning is that most North Americans don't like it), it would be nice if they had it available upon request.
The portions were pitiful for the price we paid. For 14 dollars, my boyfriend was served the lunch special which consisted of a small handful of mango salad, a sliver of dried chicken on a skewer, 2 shrimps, and what tasted like cold and undercooked instant noodles. I had the papaya salad ($9), which was a small portion of salad drenched in dressing on a lettuce leaf. The quality and taste of food was average at best and the service staff was alright, but not overly friendly or helpful. We went for some fried chicken and fries after our meal here because we were still starving.
Thai food for people who are afraid of "Ethnic" cuisine. Despite my reviews I'm not "cheap" but I believe in value for money. Thai Sun is the opposite of value for money. The location of Thai Sun is great in the newly redeveloped uptown waterloo and the Atomosphere is great as well, comfy booths low lighting, soft music. Then you get your food and it all goes off the rails. So bland, so boring. This is Thai food for the kraft dinner palate. There is nothing remarkable about the food at all. It’s not spicy and it doesn’t have any of the taste you’d expect from Thai food, no chillis no basil,etc... Then the ultimate let down, you get your bill and realizing you’re paying 25-30% more for Thai food than you would be at many of the great Viet-Thai restaurants in Kitchener Waterloo. Any other would have better food and be cheaper.
Food was quite tasty and relatively quick (unlike other reviews). Presentation was top-notch. Service, however, was atrocious, as the server didn't return to my table at all after the food was brought. No "how are things?", no drink refills, no clearing of the plates, not even the cheque. I went up to the cash to pay the cost of the meal and made sure to get my change. Every single penny.
What started out as a potential thorn in the side of other KW Thai/Vietnamese restaurants is certainly of no concern to them any longer. Thai Sun started out so well - the decor of the restaurant was simple but contempory, the servers were extremely attentive and willing to go the extra mile to make you feel welcome, and most importantly - the food was beautifully presented and simply delicious. In the years since, it has gradually lost its way. While the food is still fairly good, the service has dwindled significantly. For both of my last two visits the restaurant was nowhere near capacity, yet servers were slow, unattentive and lacking in people skills. Turnaround time for food is also slow - 30-45 minutes is how long you can expect to wait for food to arrive once your order has been placed...not exactly a good thing for the lunchtime crowd. All in all, if you're willing to look past its mediocre service and long wait for food to arrive, you can expect a tasty meal at Thai Sun.
best thai food in the area/friendly server/relaxed atmosphere/will be back again and again
Food literally took 2 hours to get to us. We were stuck on the patio in the freezing cold and they said they would find us a seat inside when it opened up... after 2 hours, nothing... and no food either! also a cat was running around on the patio and the server kept picking up with her hands! suffice to say, i highly doubt she washed her hands after handling this stray. this place is a joke, don't go here unless you hate yourself or the people you are eating with. HORRIBLE!
fantastic authenitic Thai cuisine...everything is made fresh as you order/spring rolls are the best I've ever tasted...we go on a regular basis
horrible service, bad food. not authentic thai at all.
excellent fresh made-to-order food, the service was superb, atmosphere very nice. i love this place and i'll keep going back!
We waited an hour to be served and when we were the potatoes were completely raw and hard, we couldn't even pierce them with our utensils... Not very impressed.
I enjoy this restaurant from time to time. I like the patio in the summer and the decor inside as well. Its always a little awkward when you enter because they do not have a hostess but they are still quick to seat you and I have always had fast food arrival times here - my apps usually come right away! As a vegetarian I also like that you get to choose what type of meat or fish comes in each dish. Not a huge menu but lots of variety and different tastes to try. Excellent beverage menu.
First impressions as I walked in was that it seemed a very posh place, but had a very warm atmosphere. Nice esthetics. Service was very prompt, despite how busy it was. Not a large selection in the menu, but it was not hard to find something to try. Had to ask for chopsticks though, a little weird I think, but I won't hold it against them. The great thing about Thai Sun too, is that they have a patio section.
