Meet the owner

Stepping into Mike’s Music is like entering the heart of Toronto’s music scene. Michael Waite, the shop's owner, has nearly a half a century of musical experience that dates way back to junior high school. Mike says two events triggered his “desire to play music": listening to a British Beatles record before it was released in Canada and then seeing them live at Maple Leaf Gardens.

Mike was hooked and, like many teens, got a bass guitar and spent the necessary hours teaching himself to play it. Mike was deeply into performing and joined a few bands, with Breathless being one of the most memorable. Over time, nearly 20 band members – including the late Nash the Slash – played with Breathless. Mike continued with the band for seven years playing the bass guitar, singing and, sometimes, playing the bass clarinet.

But it wasn't just listening to music and playing it – hanging out in record stores eventually led to getting a job at Sam the Record Man in Etobicoke. Because Mike’s beatnik appearance didn't match the dress code, he worked behind the scenes but eventually his knowledge and his skill at finding records was noticed.

By 1983, Mike had bought a Sam franchise but the entire franchise went bankrupt in 2001. Mike continued independently in the same Danforth Avenue location near Broadview station at his own store: Mike’s Music.

    What an Amazing store. It's like a museum with chandeliers plus antiques in the basement. Mike's got everything you could wish forin music.
