Joe Fortes was a larger-than-life kind of guy who became a legendary lifeguard credited with saving more than 100 lives. In 1985, a century after Joe came to Vancouver, a restaurant was named after him – Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House.
Since then, this multiple award-winning seafood restaurant has become just as famous as its moniker. Consistently ranked as one of Canada’s top 100 restaurants on TripAdvisor, this landmark restaurant serves some of the best seafood to go along with a heavy dose of atmosphere.
When former long-time owner and legendary restaurateur Bud Kanke founded Joe’s, his vision to combine an oyster house with a premier dining destination based around seafood and a very social environment was an instant success. The 15-seat, three-tiered oyster bar, complete with back-lit mirrors, takes centre-stage in the 70-seat dining room (the upstairs seats 170 inside).

I don't think you can go wrong with that place. I went there for my birthday, best service I had and how great to enjoy the melody of the piano in the background. The filet mignon was great and I can't wait to try the oysters and hopefully I get lucky enought to sit on the roof top patio during summer!
Unreal... First visit, we tried a LOT of the menu and weren't disappointed at all! Prawns are delicious, scallops are fantastic, crab cakes were good, halibut was delicious and the pan fried oysters were nothing short of legendary! To top it off we had cheesecake and banana cream Creme brûlée for dessert that were awesome too! We aren't from West End but will definitely be back here any time we are! One more thing: take dates if they are worth it. This place sticks in the mind.
One of the best Vancouver restaurants that we've eaten at! Service was excellent, food was delicious, and the ambiance was superb! We would definitely recommend this Seafood restaurant to anyone in downtown Vancouver!

Want to skip the crowds at the beach but still catch a glimpse of the fireworks? This decades-old bistro named after Vancouver’s most legendary lifeguard has a rooftop patio that’s beautiful in and of itself – and it’s even more appealing during the Celebration of Light when fireworks brighten the sky overhead. Make a stop at the oyster bar inside before heading to the outdoor dining area, where you’ll enjoy impeccably cooked seafood along with craft beer, fine wines and more.

The lush plants and living wall create a green oasis perched above the hustle and bustle of Robson Street. The rooftop bar is a prime place for a chilled glass from the award-winning wine list. Snag a coveted table to dive into some of Vancouver’s best seafood – don’t miss the house-made lobster oil.
