Meet the owner

Bryan Taylor brings a lengthy classical music background to The Gramophone. The owner of one of Edmonton's best destinations for high-end audio and visual equipment, he's dedicated most of his life to music. “I have a degree in music and I played in the Victoria Symphony for 10 years,” he says. He also played in the Edmonton Symphony for 28 years as a trumpet player, and worked for a time as a stage manager.

Customers at The Gramophone benefit from Bryan's experience as a live performer and audio equipment expert; he's worked closely with the kinds of products customers are looking for. “People want the good gear we sell,” he says. “But they also want the setup skills we offer, like installation and home control – that sort of thing.” Bryan and his staff intimately know the entire experience of buying new audio equipment, from product selection to home installation. He says the experience customers have in his store is different from what they might encounter in a big-box environment.

Over twenty years ago I purchased a NAD receiver from this store and when I moved recently I was unable to connect my turntable properly. NO PROBLEM. Bryan kindly assisted me with this over the telephone and was willing to look at the connections in-store at no cost if necessary. Now I have great sounding music again.

    Hit And Miss

This store is pretty hit and miss for me. I enjoy classical and jazz but they seem to be selling to "elitists" only. Kind of snobish at times and I miss the old location. This new location is kind of hidden so I hope it doesn't hurt their business too much in that respect.

Save your dollars to invest in a turntable and speakers from these purveyors of all things music. Their new larger shop in Old Strathcona carries fine musical instruments and the city’s biggest collection of classical and jazz CDs (those silver disceroonis, remember?). Come have a careful look around their collection of artist-quality horns, flutes and saxes – and indulge that rock-star harpist fantasy awhile.
