3 of the best hiking destinations in Canada

November 6, 2014

Canada is a wonderful place to explore and enjoy the great outdoors, especially in the fall. Before you tie up your hiking boots, learn about a few of the best hiking trails that Canada has to offer.

3 of the best hiking destinations in Canada

1. Tonquin Valley, Canadian Rockies, Alberta

To do the entire hike, you'll need upwards of three days to complete the 43.5 kilometres of terrain.

  • Make sure to hit this hike in late summer or early fall to reduce your risk of getting caught in the snow, though don't be surprised if you still see a few flurries.
  • This hike provides stunning views of the Tonquin Valley and your hard work will all seem worth it when you see Amethyst Lake.

2. West Coast Trail, Bamfield, British Columbia

New hikers should hit the trail in the north at Port Renfrew, as the southern portion of the trail beginning in Bamfield is significantly more challenging.

  • If you plan to hike the entire trail, you'll need to purchase a permit for an overnight stay along the way. Permits are limited to keep the number of hikers low, so get yours early.
  • This challenging hike will take you past beaches and through forests and bogs. You can take in the sights of old trees and waterfalls, and if you're lucky and the sky is clear, you'll even be treated to a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean.
  • This 75-kilometre trail is accessible all year long, but search and rescue services only guarantee help May through September.

3. Bear's Hump, Waterton National Park, Alberta

If you are looking for a family-friendly hike, check out this trail located in Waterton National Park.

  • This hike is moderate but short, clocking in at around 2.8 kilometres.
  • With an elevation gain of 225 metres, this trail is well-maintained, but steep. You'll head up several switchbacks and traverse thick wooden steps to get to the top of this hike.
  • If you have small children and want to take your time hiking, you may want to hit this popular trail early in the day to avoid crowds.
  • The trail takes roughly an hour or longer if you're a beginner or are bringing children with you.
  • The top of the hike rewards you with panoramic views of Upper and Middle Waterton Lakes.

Hiking holidays don't have to be limited to the middle of summer. Autumn is the perfect time to take in the beautiful colours and cool, crisp air.
