Try some revisited comfort food in Montreal

What does comfort food mean to you? We believe it’s important to indulge in life, and with that comes a lot of food. So forget the usual comfort food dishes - to us, comfort food is rich, hearty and filling, like homemade charcuterie, foie gras or lardo. We are here to redefine your definition of comfort food.

Deville Dinerbar

1
1425, rue Stanley, Montréal, QC H3A 1P4

Fried foods always make us feel better, and that doesn’t just mean french fries. When it comes to fried comfort food, Deville Dinerbar has got you covered – all thanks to their southern fried buttermilk chicken. Served on a Belgian waffle, it’s drizzled with a buttery maple sauce that adds just the right amount of sweet. The skin is extra crispy, the chicken is moist and the waffle is the perfect pairing. If you’re still hungry, try their mac-and-cheese stuffed wontons for more deep-fried goodness. This is southern comfort food at its finest!

Restaurant Hostaria

2
236, rue Saint-Zotique E, Montréal, QC H2S 1L1

You need to eat here - some of their dishes are even better than what we’ve tried in Italy. Their homemade pappardelle with boar ragu is delicious and warming - the perfect filling winter dish to keep you nice and full for the cold weather outside. The pasta is delicate and cooked al dente, and the generous portion of boar is tender and full of flavour. For a little added warmth, drizzle some fiery house-made chili oil. Even if you don’t see the boar ragu on Hostaria’s chalkboard menu, you’ll definitely find something comforting, like their roast suckling pig.

Le Chien Fumant

3
4710, rue de Lanaudière, Montréal, QC H2J 3P7

When a restaurant prepares and smokes their own meat for their charcuterie platter, you know you’re in for a treat. At Le Chien Fumant, that is exactly what they do. And their charcuterie plate, like their chalkboard menu, changes depending on the week. On one occasion, they offered spicy chorizo, turkey terrine, sopresatto and salami. It was served with grainy mustard, pickles and sweet rolls. The flavour of their charcuterie is very pronounced because it’s so fresh and made in-house by Chien Fumant. When we think of comfort food, we think of cured meat - it’s the carnivore in us.

Restaurant L'Express Inc

4
3927, rue Saint-Denis, Montréal, QC H2W 2M4

Montreal’s iconic French in the Plateau has been satisfying customers for over 30 years. Their signature dish remains their perfect veal and mushroom ravioli, made in house of course. The ravioli is stuffed with veal and mushrooms and is topped with extra mushrooms for an added earthy flavour. The sauce is a veal au jus reduction, similar to a demi-glace sauce, with plenty of butter in that perfectly French way. The mushrooms are champignons de Paris, and chives top this dish for that little

Restaurant Pho Lien

5
5703-B Ch de la Côte des Neiges, Montréal, QC H3S 1V7

Remember when your mom made you soup to feel better? Well, she knew what she was doing! And so does Cote-des-Neiges’ Pho Lien, a Vietnamese restaurant serving arguably the best pho in Montreal. What makes this pho so great is the broth, which takes several hours to make. The pho is made with beef broth, rice noodles and green onions, plus you can always add rare beef, cooked beef, brisket or chicken. A dish of bean sprouts, mint and lime wedges are served so you can flavour your pho as you like.

Pizzeria

6
69 Rue Saint-Zotique E, Montréal, QC H2S 1K7

Montreal has exploded with new pizza joints serving authentic Neapolitan pizza, New York-style pizza and Roman-style pizza, to name a few. One of our favourites that we’re sure will soon become yours hails from Little Italy’s San Gennaro, which is a neighbourhood café, bakery and pizza al taglio. We think nothing is more comforting than their potato-lardo pizza, topped with potato (yes, carbs on carbs!) and delicious, glistening, salty strips of lardo. There is something about the cured pork, seasoned with herbs and thinly sliced, that makes any day better. And their pizza crust is perfect too!

Tavern on the Square

7
1, Car Westmount, Westmount, QC H3Z 2P9

Mac and cheese is definitely comfort food, and we love it all the more when the ingredients are not of the usual variety. Here, it's made with four different cheeses: Comté, Victor & Berfold, Parmesan and Mascarpone. As if that weren’t enough, they add pancetta and black truffle purée. The Comté, Victor & Berfold, Parmesan and Mascarpone cheeses add so much creaminess to the sauce while the crispy pancetta adds salt and crunch. Taverne on the Square is a posh little white tablecloth eatery that shows you that comfort food can be found absolutely anywhere!

Opting to have a salad used to mean that you were on a diet, but not anymore! Today there are so many unique combinations and eating salad is now about satisfying a craving, not going on a diet. We love clean eating when it tastes good! [image creditl: iStockphoto]
Let’s face it, we’re only happy about Thanksgiving because we get a day off from work! It’s not a big holiday like our neighbours to the south but that doesn’t mean we can’t go out and celebrate with a good meal and a fun experience. Here are some fun Montreal alternatives to the traditional turkey dinner. We’re thankful that we live in Montreal with all of these amazing restaurants!
When we think of Mother’s Day we tend to think of brunch, but plenty of mothers would rather go out for dinner! These restaurants are open on Sunday nights, including Mother’s Day, and vary from French, to Italian, to Syrian, to Spanish and more. There is something for every mother and their finicky palate![image credit: iStock]
