Here is a dish that still has not been celebrated enough, and we have to thank L’Gros Luxe and Le Cheese for having remedied the situation by creating the Grilled Cheese Month. The four locations of L'Gros Luxe and the Casse-Croûte Le Cheese on Monkland will showcase a different sandwich every day in November! Why not also head over to one of these other establishments that give life to very satisfying grilled cheese?
L’Gros Luxe isn’t the only one to celebrate grilled cheese in all its flavours. Le Cheese Casse-Croûte, located on Monkland, offers a special “30 for 30” menu to honour Grilled Cheese month, serving a different cheese sandwich every day of the month. Check out le Casse-Croûte’s website during the month of November for more details.
Here they offer no less than eight varieties of grilled cheese. You can choose between simple cheddar cheese and bacon or the grilled cheese with pulled pork, onion, gruyere, smoked meat, brie and goat cheese, spicy ground beef, fresh lobster (yum) or even the King Kong: a 5oz burger with buns consisting of... two grilled cheese. You'll wipe your mouth, then be back for more.
It's hard to miss this establishment on the not-so-bucolic Decarie Boulevard in the west of the island. It's the ideal place to stop for good grilled cheese in the wee hours of the morning. Orange Julep is open until 2 a.m. - till 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays - but be careful: it's closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Of course we went to the corner of Mont-Royal and Saint-Urbain to taste the famous brunches at Beauty's, but we shouldn't overlook their grilled cheese with bacon served between two slices of Challah egg bread.
This Mile-End establishment that is home to many artists serves lunch, coffee, sandwiches and, of course, grilled cheese sandwiches with evocative names like the Emmenthal Débile, the Corrimangue, the Gaspézia and more. And, yes, as the name suggests, you'll actually find a small grocery store here.
It's impossible to compile a list of the best grilled cheese in town without mentioning the travelling grilled cheeserie PA & Gargantua, offering "the best of the kingdom" (that’s their statement, but who are we to contradict?). On-site orders, deliveries (for a group), catering...everything is possible! On the menu: the classic (smoked butter, Cheddar Île-aux-Grues), the bacon (with shallot confit), Liam's Brisket (with pickled onions), the veggie (with homemade salsa), the boss (with asparagus, boiled egg and foam cheddar) and, obviously, the gargantuan (a double with chili, sour cream and cheddar).
This little champ located on Laurier Street offers excellent espresso and "luxury" grilled cheese carefully prepared with the help of good products from Le Fromentier, their lovely neighbour. So what will it be? Gruyère and onions? Emmenthal cheese, ham and dijon? Raclette cheese and bacon? Goat cheese and green apples? The menu changes constantly so you can discover and rediscover again and again.
In some locations of this friendly small chain, the famous soup-and-sandwich duo is inseparable. Enjoy seasonal vegetables and a good grilled cheese prepared with love and - incidentally - aged cheddar from Île-aux-Grues. And keep a close eye on the menu as it changes every day. Who knows what you may find between your two slices of bread...
