How do you like your pancakes? Let us count the ways. You can like buttermilk pancakes with bacon or sausage or you can like them savoury and sweet by adding fruit on the side. You can like them “Super Trucker” style with pulled pork, crisp pork belly, eggs, homefries and toast. You can enjoy them for brunch or wait until lunch. It’s pretty rare to find a place that serves pancakes in so many creative ways, and they serve them all-day long.
If you haven’t checked out Vancouver’s most notorious breakfast spot, bring a friend for moral support. The Elbow Room’s service is known across the city, and so are their Big Ass Pancakes. You can also get favourites like the Tuti Fruity, which offers you choices to mix-and-match fruit flavours like apple cinnamon, strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, peach, banana chocolate chip and raspberry.
Standing in line for brunch is basically a right of passage in this city, but Jam Café is totally worth the stomach-growling wait. The Victoria-based café opened a Vancouver outpost in the spring of 2016, much to the delight of local foodies. Generously sized and unapologetically decadent, these breakfast dishes are the stuff of legends. The sweet-meets-savoury pulled pork pancakes are a hearty way to start your morning; the double-stacked pancakes are layered with juicy pulled pork and topped with maple barbecue glaze, jalapenos, sour cream and pickled cabbage. For something sweeter, the red velvet pancakes are a heavenly choice.
A locally-owned eatery that serves awesome all-day breakfasts seven days a week, Jethro’s is known for enormous portions that will knock out any hangover. The waits are totally worthwhile because the half-dozen pancake options include favourites like banana pancakes stuffed with caramel, pecans and streusel. The stack is topped with – you guessed it – more caramel, pecans and streusel plus whipped butter.
Bordering on Vancouver's historic Gastown neighourhood, Deacon’s Corner is the original redux diner. They specialize in classic Southern-style diner food and all-day breakfasts. Since you'll be visiting for the pancakes, be sure to check out Deacon’s Carolina pulled pork pancakes – a must-try for any carnivorous pancake-lover. You get two giant buttermilk pancakes covered in their signature pulled pork, plus eggs any way you like them.
South Cambie’s favourite traditional “pannekoek” house, The Dutch Wooden Shoe Café specializes in their own secret pancake recipe. They serve these fluffy bread cakes with a variety of toppings, from savoury meats and cheeses to sweet syrups, yogurt, fruit, whipped cream and ice cream. There are 30 classics to choose from, including The Windmill, a plain pancake topped with sausage slices, cheese, spinach, tomato slices, a fried egg and Hollandaise sauce.
A Vancouver breakfast institution, Sophie's unique decor features art, vintage toys and bizarre ephemera from all over. This wildly popular brunch joint offers a vast breakfast menu that's highlighted by their delicious classic pancakes. Order the deluxe buttermilk pancakes with whipped cream, bacon and seasonal fruit and afterwards, head home for a long afternoon snooze.
Swap your basic short stack for something a little fancier at L’Abbatoir, where delightfully delicate Parisian-style pancakes (aka: crepes) are stuffed with creamy ricotta and lemon zest. Light and citrusy crepes are served with roasted apples and crème diplomat. For a truly magnificent morning meal, pair your crepes with a little bubbly! French champagne and B.C. sparkling wines are available by the bottle during the Gastown restaurant’s Bubbles at Brunch service on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
