Meet the owner

The first thing you need to know about The Rosedale Diner is that it’s not actually a diner.

Sure, it’s got somewhat of that classic 1950s grease pit look, and the restaurant has been open since 1978, but the feel is different and, behind the scenes, something very contemporary is going on. “We do what we want,” says owner Dubi Filar. “There are no rules.”

That means the beef on your Rosedale Burger is not a mix that comes from a factory. It’s a special custom-made blend from one cow, explains Dubi, and every other topping, every ingredient – from secret sauce to a grilled Bermuda onion and Boston Bibb lettuce – was picked or prepped that day, from scratch or “the best buns money can buy.” The buns come from Marc Thuet, by the way. Even the fries are cut in house and the gravy is “a three-day process,” adds head chef Chris Grainger.

So don’t be fooled by the restaurant’s name, for the success of the The Rosedale Diner was built on its distinguished dishes, authentic backdrop and remarkable service.

Do Not Recommend

The service here is slow, the wait staff rude and abrupt, and the prices were outrageous for mediocre food. Too many other great restaurants in the city to enjoy. Thumbs down.

** AVOID AT ALL COSTS ** We visited this restaurant for Sunday brunch. First we ordered the Huevas picante dish, and were told that they were out of salsa or sour cream. OK, we'd have the dish anyway, but would they agree to waive the substitution of salad for fries ($2), given that they were missing the other ingredients. After a consultation between the inexperience waitresses, the answer was a flat "no". We then ordered the Buffalo and Tomato salad (aka caprese) $10 plus chicken $6 = $16. For $16, this Buffalo salad featured a mound of waxy winter tomatoes and a SINGLE slice of buffala mozarella cheese on the top! When brought to the waitresses' attention, I was told that mozarrella cheese was very expensive and accused of "wanting a freebie! She informed us that she was (presumably by day) a "professional food critic" and I had no idea what I was complaining about. She's obviously never seen a caprese salad elsewhere! We sent the plate back to the kitchen, and were not offered any substitution or apology by the staff, who ignored us until it was time to get the bill. Never in recent memory have we been treated in a restaurant with such arrogance and ignorance of basic customer service. We have been clients of this establishement for at least 15 years, but we will never go back to receive similar treatment in future.
