Madelines serve the best fish & chips, and this is coming from a person that was brought up in England!
We came here with a friend who lives in town and comes often. Don't let the appearance fool you. It was a very good breakfast. Eggs cooked perfectly, 4 pieces of pemeal bacon. French toast came with 4 pieces. Kept coffee cups filled. Rye toast on option. The hash browns, in my opinion were okay, and maybe could have been a little more plentiful. But the others liked them. I would've rated the service higher except that a couple orders of a toast came quite late in the meal. In fact, my wife was almost done. The waitress said they coming a couple of times, but still, they should have been right there when your meal arrived. My wife said she didn't the waitress was that friendly, but I didn't notice.
We've been coming to Stratford each summer for about 15 years, and we always eat here at least twice during our stay...last week we ate there 3 days in a row. The servers are friendly and helpful, the food is delicious and plentiful...I especially love whatever soup is on for the day because you can tell it was made from scratch. The "special" each day seems to be a regular menu item which is about $1 off. Yesterday I got the fish on a bun which included a big hunk of hand-battered cod, slaw, choice of potatoes and soup for $8.95. I was too full for dessert so I took a butter tart home for later. My other favorite is the sausage w/ kraut. Love love love Madelyn's Diner!
My wife and I have had lunch here, and it's fine (though the sandwiches are a bit big for me), but this is the place to be for breakfast. Good, home-made comfort food. Come here for the breakfast, and check out one of Stratford's finer restaurants for lunch or dinner.
First off all, this is like a retro-diner/slightly shabby. So don't expect pretty. Grilled cheese very tasty, burger excellent. Food greasy like it should be from a diner.
Went in for breakfast with two friends. Ordered the benny. Im a big fan of Features benny, so I was up for a little comparison. It was fantastic, eggs were just as I ordered them, hollandaise sauce was thick and very good. It was busy while we were there but everything came out in a timely manner, and our server was very polite. I hav'nt been to Madelyn for a while, its a little out of the way for us. I will be back soon though. Also worth a mention was the benny and coffee was under 10 dollars which I thought was good value.
The place is located on Huron street between Forman and Huntington. It seems this place has bee around for ages. I know as a kid I remember a car repair place in that location and perhaps a used car lot. But for most of us it has always been Stratford's first modern day diner. The entry is small and lands you in the middle of a very brightly lit room with a semi-open kitchen a lunch bar and stools on the far wall and tables to your right and further along the hall to your left. Table and chairs are out of the 50's...but suit the place. We usually find ourselves there for dinner....on nights when cooking is not on the to-do list. The menu is basic and if you could describe "diner food"...and good diner food at that....this would be it. There are usually a special or two on the board as you walk in. They are typically generous and good. GF usually picks one of those. Their grilled Rueben is great as is the fries. Fish and Chips are the best in town. The onion rings as well....the best. Portions are on the large size and the price is always good value for the money. It has a full liquor license and in summer a patio. The place is somewhat Iconic and is always busy. The reliability of the fare and the friendliness of the staff keeps everyone coming back.
Friends from Michigan came to visit so we took them to the best place in town... Madelyns! The sign said Seniors menu so we had to check it out. It was fabulous, we had the Fish and Chips, Liver and Onions and the Hot Beef Sandwich. We were full but the waitress told us that dessert was included and we had the Rice Pudding too (raisins, whip cream and cinammon FANTASTIC). We will definitly be back.
The sandwich was wonderful, not what we had expected and the salad is fabulous with cranberries and fetta cheese. The Fish and chips is just as good as they claim, and thats hard to do!! The waitresses were very pleasant and it is obvious they love their jobs as they are good at it. It is what is it, a Diner, and a grade A one at that! Was looking for Madelyn...will try again next itme!
Busy Spot ...WOW. Food was great, the service was great. Little out of the way but well worth it.
Good specials and good burgers, was more than filling sat out on the patio and enjoyed a nice lunch under sun Waiter was fun and entertaining
you just feel like part of the family. madelyn is so kind, funny, real. its just like eating dinner at a friends house.
This is a unique place that has character and charm! It is a Diner and one is just waiting for "Alice" to appear! They are always having fun, even during chaos! It is like Live Dinner Theater
Sometimes this place it good, other times it isn't. Omlette was cold and tasted gross. Hamburgers are okay to eat
A great place to go - the staff are great, the food is fabulous and all you need to do is ask for Madelyn to enjoy the whole experience!!!!! You know that show "Cheers" where everyone knows your name ~ thats Madelyn's - Your home away from home!
Every body knows each other in there. The waitresses are noisy and talk amongst themselves. We happpen to like that atmosphere. Food is prepared pretty much where you can see it. This is a greasy spoon but is terrific.
