"Upon entering, don’t let yourself get too confused by the wide variety of breads, pastries, cakes, even a fridge of cheeses. As you will make your way to the back of the open space and slightly up on the ramp, you will find the actual restaurant" "The Breakfast Wrapped-Up was our favorite. It came wrapped in whole wheat tortilla with sour cream right on top. The plate was shared by a mountain of refried beans paste, a corn salad and a mini-dish of a sauce" Just a few bites of our experience.
I emailed the bakery in advance inquiring about how much selection they would have later in the day, and within a few hours I got a reply that I could order in advance (even though I was outside of Kingston). The bakery was pretty good at replying about costs, but not really on the size (length, width, weight). The outside exterior of the shop is very unique. Standing out from other shops. It was a little difficult to know where to stand to pick up orders, and navigate around other customers to get to the cash to pick up the order. We enjoyed the French Batard. The Whole Wheat Buns were okay, but oddly shapped. I was hoping the Rosemary Breadsticks would be delicious, but that was only after I scraped off the yellow coloured flour, warmed it up, and put on some butter! I was a little bit disappointed because I remember 5 years ago being invited to a dinner above the bakery, and that was amazing. Would I come back again? Only to try it out again, or just a treat.
Not much I can say that has not already been said. the food is top notch, but you pay for waht you get. This is not your typical lunch menu, but well worth the stop. Grab some bread, cheese, baked garlic and dragon noodles for the trip home.. mmmm
Went for a Sunday breakfast with family. The patio was perfect, service was great and the breakfast was delicious!! What more could you ask for?
My husband and I stopped in here a year ago on our honeymoon and loved it. So, naturally, when we had the chance to stop in again, in passing, on our anniversary, we were excited. The menu was disappointing, however. I gather it changes quite regularly? I have no idea, but just as last year, I had a hard time choosing something from the long list of appetizing sounding items, this time I had a hard time choosing something I wanted to eat. I ended up with the "meaty burger", and it was okay. Nothing to write home about. If anything, I found the rosemary too overpowering. It even overpowered the mayo and ketchup! And ketchup usually masks just about any taste. The fries, however, were very good. My husband chose a cold sandwich, and he said it was tasty. He also enjoyed the fries. The pot of tea I ordered was not good. The brand was Mother Tuckers or something like that. Give me Red Rose, or don't bother. Despite the fact that I let it steep a long time, it tasted like brown hot water and little else. Please - change the brand for next time. It is a pet peeve of mine when restaurants cheap out on little things like that, like substituting no name ketchup for Heinz. Small detail - big impression. Finally, the tables are WAY TOO CLOSE together. We are not overly large people, but we are tall, and I found that both of us were continually knocked by passersby, and more than once had to pull our chairs in while eating. What a nuisance! Thin out the tables and give people more elbow/breathing room!! It's not a greasy spoon, but the comfort level is about the same. It gives the impression that the owners wish to bum rush you out of there...eat and go! Not good.
beautiful and delicious! I am from Kingston and love this place. the building is charming and romantic, the dining room is bright and the patio is sweet! always clean and the service is good. The food is wonderful i love their Pain Au Chocolat! their breads are wonderful the ciabatta is great and so is the olive rosemary loaf. Their pre-made sandwich are expensive but you get a lot in them and they are wonderful! i had the curried chicken sandwich -there was a bit too much mayo for my taste- but overall the flavor was wonderful! Always fresh, the menu has some really fun items on it and the prices are generally reasonable. Gourmet food that's adventurous and delicious! we have their cookbook and use it all the time, the recipes in it are wonderful and the food tastes just as good at home, their BBQ sauce is now our favorite and has become our family standard.
I have read great things about this cafe, so I thought I'd check it out for myself. It seems I had gone on a bad day because I wasn't very impressed with my food. The boccocini salad and the chocolate eclair were both not very fresh. The potato soup was fairly good though but nothing spectacular. However, I must say that the chicken sandwich and mango salad both tasted very fresh and delicious. Even so, for what I paid I was not satisfied with my meal as a whole. Maybe I would have had a better experience dining in as opposed to getting takeout.
I've been here a couple times and the food is pretty good (the bread is delicious, as expected!). The server is always friendly and enthusiastic. The thing I like about Pan chancho is their menu - they always have something that's a little different. Also, their ingredients always taste fresh. The poutine comes in a little cute cauldron and was good, though I must admit a fine dining take on the poutine can never beat the chip trucks! :) The garlic waffles were incredibly good, I'm definitely going to order it again! I didn't like the Beemster all that much though, the sandwich was far too greasy and the meat and cheese chosen were both too strong in flavour and salty to be put in combination. The coleslaw on the side was really fresh and good though! Overall, Pan Chancho is a nice little place with good, fresh food and a nice ambience. Of course, their bread is good too!
The best tuna sandwich I've ever tasted. I come from Paris France, and I felt right at home in this restaurant. The staff was great. Polite friendly and eager to do their job. My 4 year old son still talks about Pan Chancho and can't wait to go back. Bravo Pan Chancho!!!
My daughter and I took her three children for lunch and were favorably impressed with the restaurant and its children friendly menu and servers. Though it was busy with lunch diners, we were served in a timely and polite manner. The server was knowledgeable about the dishes for which we had questions. She was able to make appropriate suggestions concerning choices for the children and for us as well. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The food was well prepared & presented and best of all tasted very good. I would dine here again!
The burger was ordered as medium but was in fact rare. There was no way the burger could be eaten in a polite manner. This problem was common to most of the others in the group. I guess the place is intended for younger people. The Sticky Pudding was not bad but really not sticky enough.
I've been eating there everyday for the past three weeks. Everytime I go I get the soup & Bun and I haven't seen the same soup twice yet. And there's an excellent variety of buns that so I can choose the one that is right for my soup of the day. I've also tried the apple ginger muffins and Pain Au Chocolat, both are very good.
Super enthusiastic waiter offered his suggestions on the best vegetarian meals on the menu. He brought the bread and drinks very fast and was just attentive enough without being irritating. The food was absolutely delicious - I expected little from such a bizarre combination, but it was one of the best meals I've had in Kingston. Very filling, very tasty, and I had leftovers to eat for a snack later. My total bill was 14 before tax, which I thought was quite reasonable. The dining room is a little countryfied with all the floral prints, but it's light and airy and nice for brunch, lunch, or breakfast.
For what we paid for the two dishes comparatively were not equal. The sandwich and fries were excellent, great bread and ingredients but the other dish was more expensive, smaller and not that exciting. I think I could make it at home. Our waitress (we sat upstairs) was very disorganized. Brought the wrong sized beer, no bread service until we asked, and had to ask to get water refilled. Several other tables that arrived after us, were served first. I don't know what took so long as the lady next to us had the same sandwich. If we lived in the area we would definitely return, the food was good. The breads, etc. at the entrance looked delicious and we would have loved to have gotten some.
I've been reading plenty of positive reviews on Pan Chancho so I decided to check it out. So I went to the bakery early in the morning and first noticed that that familiar bakery smell of fresh bread was missing which was a bit odd. I picked up a croissant, a pain au chocolat and a cinnamon-raisin roll. They were good but not spectacular. Both the croissant and pain au chocolate lacked flakiness on the outside although the breadiness was just about right. The cinnamon-raisin roll was a bit too sweet and the raisins were a bit overpowering. Overall, Pan Chancho seems to be an excellent bakery but is a little overrated. I haven't tried the other breads but was a little dissappointed with their croissant which should be the benchmark of Western/European bakeries.
Excellent!!! Can't say enough wonderful things. The food and atmosphere, I felt like I was in a European cafe.
Great view from upstairs tables, great server, great food... tuna loin was good, a little heavy on the peppercorns, but still good. Linguini to boot, great meal
the atmosphere was fantastic, big beautiful windows. presentation of the food was delightful. the apple butter was among the best I've had. the service was friendly and helpful. the cheese was little bit awkward and difficult to eat. The marinate with the cheese dish made the baguette a little soggy.
We absolutely LOVE this bakery, it's the best we've ever been to. In our opinion the cafe food is not as incredibly good as the baked goods and desserts, but we still think it's among the best.
The food is ok, the service is really bad. Not very impressed and do not understand why most people rave about this place.
