Dishonest contractor

I was supposed to get new shingles from Sierra Lane on Mon, Apr 26, 2011. Benson was supposed to come to my house Fri, Apr 22, 2011 to show me shingle samples but he did not show up. I went away over the Easter weekend, at which point my brother in law (who is a general contractor) told me he would be able to do my shingles for much cheaper than Sierra Lane had quoted me. I decided to call Benson when I got home to inform him of this. When I got home late Sunday evening (Apr 25), I tripped on something going up my front stairs. There were shingles and old roofing nails everywhere--front lawn, back lawn, and front and back decks. I was in shock--Benson had sent a contractor to my house on Easter Sunday when I wasn't home without confirming with me that it was ok or that I still wanted to go ahead with the job AND before I had even seen shingle samples. Benson showed up on Mon, April 26. I told him I was not going to use him as a contractor. Benson charged me almost $1200 for one day of work--he said he had to pay the subcontractor for the labor and for materials used. I gave him a cheque that day so that he would get off my property. Benson's subcontractor then shingled my roof. I went to pay the subcontractor and found out Benson had not paid him for labor when he removed my shingles OR for the materials the subcontractor used. I stopped payment on the cheque I gave Benson but ultimately had to pay him because he sent the bill to a collection agency. The fact of the matter is that Sierra Lane did unauthorized work on my house and was paid $1200 for materials they didn't buy and for labor he didn't pay his sub for. Unfortunately, my experience with Sierra Lane Construction was terrible. I hope that others can avoid this headache by choosing not to work with Sierra Lane Construction.
