Fun and friendship are at the heart of the Hexagon Board Game Café. Opened in the summer of 2014, while it serves up your usual coffeehouse fare of baked goods, sandwiches and espresso-based drinks, what owners Randy Wong and Kellie Ho are really selling is social interaction. “Our number one thing is we’re trying to give the customer a different kind of social experience,” explains Randy. “You can talk in a café, pretty much anywhere, but when they come to our café they should expect to have fun.”
The two met while at architectural school and, though neither had any formal business training, the thought of combining their passions into a business intrigued them enough to dive in. “It is daunting because it’s brand new to us,” Randy points out. “But actually, I felt like architectural school helped us approach our decisions with critical thinking in terms of construction and how we wanted the whole process of building and running the business to go.”

The owners became addicted to the concept of playing board games in cafes while living in South Korea. They brought the concept back to Edmonton with them, and opened their own little dream hangout spot. While duking it out over a game of Battleship, sip on espresso, iced tea, soda or an ice cream float. They are open till 11 p.m., Sunday to Thursday and 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
