Jalapeno's Mexican Grill invites you to their dining room. Come relax on their terrace under the sun. They are open nightly from Monday to Saturday. You can get there not only by public transit but also by bicycle. They are situated in a location characterized with restaurants and stores.
Jalapeno’s Mexican Grill gets a lot of double takes from passersby hoping the inconspicuous downtown restaurant serves authentic Mexican food. And the place doesn’t disappoint. In fact, its fresh, house-made Mexican fast food has caught on in a big way with the lunchtime crowd.
“I wanted this to be like the food stands you find on the streets of Mexico City,” says Douglas Hernandez, the restaurant’s jolly proprietor and Monterrey, Mexico expatriate. He doesn’t just mean the food he and his wife make, but also the speed and efficiency of lunch-hour service. “We have every order down to under one minute,” he says. “We realize some of the people who come in have only 20 or 25 minutes for lunch.”
While Douglas is all business during the lunch rush, he saves his ebullient Latino charisma for the calmer dinner hours between 5:00 and 8:00 pm when he regularly chats up customers at the order counter.
Cheap and exceedingly cheerful, Jalapeno’s Mexican Grill is located in the west end of downtown, a stone’s throw from the Peace Bridge. Fashioned after a Mexico City food stand, the brightly coloured café serves tacos, burritos, tostadas and quesadillas for $12. Its marinated meats are street-stall authentic, and portions are generous. Prepared with three crisp corn tortillas, refried beans and your choice of meat (try chipotle chicken or spicy chorizo), veggies, cheese and sauce, the tostadas are built for big appetites.
Big with the downtown lunch crowd, Jalapeno’s Mexican Grill serves authentic Mexican fast food. It’s especially busy at lunchtime as burritos, tacos, tostadas and quesadillas fly out the door as fast as proprietor Douglas Hernandez and staff can make them. Evenings are less frantic but just as exactingly delicious. The portions are grandísimo, and everything from the salsa to the guacamole is fresh and house-made.
